An End Of An Era as Klopp Announces He is Stepping Down At The End Of The Season.
Updated: Feb 2
Growing up, loving football/soccer more than anything else is probably weird to most people. Especially if you grew up in the United States, 40+ years ago and are female. I became obsessed with the game at four years old and have loved it ever since. To say, I live and breathe the sport is an understatement. It’s impossible to put into words what it means to me. For the last 25 + years Liverpool Football Club has been everything to me. The club has had its ups and downs but everything changed for the positive when Jürgen Klopp came to Liverpool in 2015.
I went to bed Thursday night (I like to refer to it as Friday eve) happy it was almost the start of the weekend and on Sunday I get to watch my Mighty Reds play. Instead, I woke up to message after message from friends and fellow Liverpool supporters sharing the shocking news. To say I’m devastated, is an understatement. I can’t even find the words to express how heartbroken I am to learn that Jurgen Klopp has decided to step down at the end of the season.
I sat there in silence for a few minutes, trying to wrap my head around what I’ve learnt. Trying to process everything. Thinking this must be a bad dream. This can’t be real. But there it is in black-and-white, an announcement from Liverpool Football Club, followed by a YouTube video and messages from many reputable sources.
I sat up in my bed and watched the video on YouTube. And I’m not embarrassed to say, there were tears… quite a few tears. We all knew this day would come, but I didn’t anticipate it to be nearly 2 years early. How do you put into words your thoughts and feelings about someone you love and admire so much? He’s brought life back to the club, to the fans and to the city of Liverpool. For those of you that have been lucky enough to meet him, have a conversation with him or get a “Klopp hug” know how special that is. I will cherish the rare moments with him, making dreams reality and all the little things along the way.
Danke Jürgen.
