The Liverpool community mourns the passing of Gerry Marsden, front man of Gerry and the Pacemakers
I woke up to the very sad news of Gerry Marsden's death. I’m lost for words. My heart goes out to his family and friends. It’s been reported that he died from an infection in his heart.
He has left his mark in his City of Liverpool, Liverpool FC, and fans around the world with his music. In 2018 fans were delighted with him singing “You’ll Never Walk Alone” in the stands at Anfield. Fans and former #LFC Players alike I’ve taken just social media to pay their respects to Gerry.
Former CEO of Liverpool FC took to Twitter and said, “Tragic news this morning. We have lost one of the most treasured members of the @LFC family. We were honored to welcome Gerry to Anfield in 2018, and he rewarded us by singing YNWA just before kick-off. #RIPGerry”
From The Voice of Anfield, George Sephton, “I'm beyond distraught. Gerry Marsden has been a Huge part of Liverpool, the club and the City, for 60 years. He was a lovely man who won't ever be forgotten in this city. R. I. P. Gerry”
And Robbie Fowler said, “Met Gerry a few times, a Liverpool legend and singer of the best anthem I've ever heard.... enjoy the golden sky “. #ripgerry #ynwa
I will never forget the very first time I was at Anfield in the stand before kick singing You’ll Never Walk Alone will all the fans and holding my Liverpool scarf above my head. It will be a memory I will cherish. I still have that same emotional feeling every time I hear this song not just at Anfield.
And I find it ironic it was just yesterday that my sister was walking with her dog in Michigan. She stopped to write ‘2021 YNWA’ in the snow and sent me the photo.
We may have lost a legend today but Gerry will be in the hearts of people forever and his music with live on. YNWA Gerry.
